As you have probably observed personally, roadways are getting worse for Firefighters and other responders.
Last Saturday, a 38 year old driver was arrested after he was accused of intentionally hitting a Miami-Dade Firefighter with his car while trying to get around a crash scene. The driver was arrested Saturday on charges including aggravated battery on a firefighter with a deadly weapon and failure to obey a Firefighter.
The Firefighter was directing traffic at 0630 last Thursday as the driver, driving a purple Dodge Challenger, was attempting to bypass the restricted crash scene.
The Firefighter had repositioned a rig to block traffic then got out and instructed the driver to use an alternate route, but that driver disregarded the instructions and “intentionally accelerated his vehicle, using it as a deadly weapon, thus striking the victim about his legs and knocking him back a few feet.” The driver then got out of his car and pushed the Firefighter multiple times before he got back in and fled. Of course, Cops tracked him down and he’s now in the slammer.
Eyes Wide Open as Firefighters operating on roadways clearly are the greatest potential for injury and death for everyone of us. Block, protect, shut down-whatever it takes, and never take your eyes off the “motoring” public.

We don’t normally post fires without a connection to Firefighter survival, but man, these continue to happen. In this latest fire,a Kansas family is mourning after a grandmother and four of her grandchildren were killed in an early morning house fire. Five other people, including the children’s mother, were hospitalized. The fire in Independence was reported about 0622 Friday. Family members have identified the victims as Johanna Landsaw-Davis and four of her grandchildren: Bane, Case, Ahlaya and Renesmae. Five other people, three of them children, were hospitalized due to the fire. Among them are the young victims’ mother, Destiny, and oldest sibling.
It just sucks as noted and stated perfectly by Independence Fire Chief Aaron Cook:
“Our hearts are broken, and we hurt alongside you,” Cook wrote in a Facebook post. “There are no words that can adequately express the sorrow we feel for your loss. Please know that our entire department is thinking of you, praying for you, and standing beside you during this unimaginable time. This tragedy will forever leave an emotional mark on all of us.”
Sprinklers? Smoke alarms? Codes/Weakened Codes? Millions in Grants?
We’ve been talking about this stuff for decades….but yet.
