NEW BERLIN — Two firefighters sustained minor injuries Saturday afternoon while working on a garage fire in New Berlin, according to New Berlin Fire Lt. Brian Wendlick.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters were dispatched to 13580 W. Foxwood Dr. at about 4:21 p.m. Saturday after neighbors reported hearing an explosion and seeing smoke coming from an attached garage at the residence.
At the time of the incident, the homeowners were out of town.
Light smoke was noticed by the first-arriving units, coming from the garage door and eaves. Crews quickly gained entry through a garage service door. The fire was located in the garage and was put out within the garage before the fire extended into the living quarters of the home, according to the release. Two firefighters had sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene. The City of Brookfield Fire Department assisted in this incident, as well as the New Berlin Police Department, said the release.
The New Berlin Fire Department wants to remind residents to maintain working smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside each sleeping area. In the event of a fire, the early warning of a smoke alarm could save lives, according to the release. Closing bedroom and interior doors before going to bed can help slow the spread of heat, flames, and smoke, allowing time for escaping, according to the release.
