It’s no secret that we have a real problem in North America related to the ability of most volunteer fire (and EMS) departments to provide service. That’s not a “being mean” comment or being “anti” anything-it’s a fact.
Turn on the scanner app or listen to the radio and the volunteer FD’s that can almost always be counted on are the ones that maintain a crew in quarters or ones with immediate knowledge of who is responding. Otherwise, it’s crap shoot and everyone (except the caller) knows it.
We are always on the lookout for new, different or unique ideas to pump up the interest and enthusiasm to get people to join their local volunteer department…so when we saw this, we wanted to pass it on.
At this stage, as volunteer departments and their communities try to figure out what the immediate and long term future will be – because something different has to be done – ideas like this fall into the category of “every bit helps”….
Kudo’s to the folks at Second Alarm Brewhouse in Pasadena, Maryland (Baltimore/Washington area, not far from BWI Airport or Annapolis) for their unique efforts.
