Several Firefighters have been seriously injured/burned following an on scene explosion in La Grange, North Carolina (Lenoir County SE of Raleigh). Initial reports are that 2 Firefighters are in critical condition in a trauma center in Greenville, N.C.. The explosion occurred around 1530 hours when companies were on scene of brush/hay bales on fire – when the fire spread to some kind of container storing explosives and/or fireworks, which apparently detonated.
Following the explosion, command requested two aeromedical helicopters who transported the critically injured members to ECU Health Medical Center. Also requested were multiple EMS units-all injuries were reported to involve burns and shrapnel trauma. In addition to those flown out, at least 3 were transported by ground.
