Medical Helicopter Makes an Emergency Landing in Maryland Field – Maryland

A medical helicopter transporting a patient made an unscheduled stop in a field outside Mardela Springs Monday night.

The helicopter, which was flying the patient from Salisbury. Md., to a Baltimore hospital, landed in a field on Norris Twilley Road, the Wicomico County Sheriff’s office reported.

"They made a precautionary emergency landing due to an equipment malfunction, and they had a patient on board," said Cpl. Kelly Matthews with the Wicomico Sheriff’s Office.

Responders from the Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Dept. moved the patient quickly from the downed chopper and onto a helicopter from Maryland State Police Troop Four, which had flown to the site. The state police helicopter successfully flew the patient on to a Baltimore hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

The pilot of the downed helicopter and a mechanic continued to work on the helicopter through the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to WBOC reporter Lacee Griffith.
