The (North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation) SBI provided these details of how things unfolded during the fire. According to the SBI, fire crews were called around 3:15 a.m. to a multi-story building on Marly Driver and when firefighters arrived at the scene at 3:21 a.m., flames were shooting through the roof and other parts of the building. Around 3:31 a.m., a portion of the building collapsed, which caused the second floor to also collapse. Multiple firefighters were on the roof and inside the first floor during the collapse. After the collapse, several firefighters were trapped on the first floor. One firefighter died, and two others were injured. They were treated at Duke Hospital. The SBI said their Arson Unit was requested to investigate the cause and origin of the fire and the circumstances of the fatality.
