FOUR FIREFIGHTERS SUFFER CONCUSSION-TYPE INJURIES/MINOR BURNS AT FREON LEAK/EXPLOSION – CALIFORNIA

Four firefighters were injured in a fire after responding to a report of a freon leak at a Silver Lake home, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Wednesday.

The fire was reported on Lakewood Avenue North near Armstrong Avenue at around 10:48 a.m., according the LAFD. The agency said a small explosion was reported after what appeared to be a freon leak in the residence’s basement.

The cooling chemical is used in home air conditioners and refrigerators.

Although fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, they took the four injured firefighters to a hospital. Their injuries included what was described as a concussion-type injury, minor burns and inflammation.

The LAFD said the homeowner and an air conditioning technician servicing the air conditioner were treated for injuries at the scene.

Arson investigators were at the scene.
