FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN ILLINOIS FIRE

A Sunday afternoon fire that roared through a tennis court construction company’s storage barn in Homer Glen injured a firefighter and caused more than $1 million in damage.

Firefighters responded just before 12:30 p.m. to the fire in a storage barn belonging to U.S. Tennis Court Construction Co. at 13517 Bell Rd. in Homer Glen, according to Lt. Michael Kucaba of the Northwest Homer Fire Protection District.

People attending a church next door called emergency crews after they saw smoke coming from the building, Kucaba said. Crews arrived to find smoke and fire conditions that worsened and sent firefighters out of the building and into a defensive attack, he said.

Flammable materials such as latex paint, tar and sealants used in tennis courts hindered firefighters, who finally put out the blaze about 4:30 p.m., he said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, possibly burns to his neck, while responding to the blaze, Kucaba said. He was treated and released from Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet.

Approximately three-quarters of the structure was destroyed, along with several vehicles parked inside the building, said Kucaba, who estimated the blaze caused more than $1 million in damage
