CLOSE CALL IN THE FIREHOUSE WHILE RESPONDING

While returning from multiple storm-related alarms on 7/4/26, the engine had backed into the bay. The company was toned out for a motor vehicle accident. While boarding the engine, the chauffeur began pulling out while a firefighter was still getting on. The firefighter fell onto his stomach inside the rig, his legs still hanging out. The door came very close to striking the bay wall, which would have pinned the firefighter’s torso. The chauffeur stopped the rig after the members yelled repeatedly.

LESSON LEARNED:

– All drivers must check mirrors before exiting the firehouse.
– Drivers should verbally ensure the crew is ready to go.
– Driver ignored both visual and audible alerts indicating a cab door was open.
