CANADIAN FIREFIGHTER INJURED AT FIRE

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling an early morning fire on Fredericton’s north side.

Alycia Bartlett, spokesperson for the Fredericton Fire Department, told our newsroom crews responded to the 300 block of Canada Street shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Bartlett said a rear apartment attached to the main house suffered damage in the blaze, which was under control within an hour.

She said a firefighter suffered a minor injury after falling on the ice.

Three people living in the building have been temporarily displaced, but Bartlett said none of them were hurt.

She said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Meanwhile, fire officials are reminding drivers that it’s illegal to drive over unprotected hoses at the scene of a fire.

Bartlett said several drivers drove over a hose laid along the road to help extinguish the blaze, causing a couple of leaks in the line.

She said not only is driving over a hose extremely dangerous, it can cause delays in getting water on the fire.

Bartlett said it’s also an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act and can result in a fine of $172.50.

As of Tuesday morning, Bartlett was unsure whether any drivers had been charged as a result.
