State Police have arrested a Bear-area man they say is the hit-and-run driver responsible for the death of a volunteer firefighter Saturday night.
Troopers arrested Joseph Taye Monday night and charged him with offenses including manslaughter, assault and driving while revoked.
Taye’s accused of sideswiping a County Police car with his BMW before running over firefighter Michelle Smith and Edward Reiss of New Castle, who’d crashed his motorcycle on Route 13 southbound near School Lane.
After Smith and Reiss were hit, the BMW stopped on the shoulder, its driver got into a car that pulled up behind it and the second car sped off.
Smith and Reiss were hospitalized at Christiana, where Smith passed away Monday morning.
