ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF DIES 10 YEARS AFTER INJURIES AT SWIFTWATER CALL – VIRGINIA

An Eagle Rock assistant fire chief has died of injuries suffered during a swift water rescue a decade ago.

Assistant Chief Alan “Bubba” Wright was swept away by fast-moving water while assisting with rescue efforts after extreme flooding in 2016.

Fire Chief Darryl Jones told WDBJ shortly after the incident that he didn’t initially know who the current’s victim was.

“When I got him to the shore and saw the face,” Jones said.

It’s unclear how long Wright was under, but he was in cardiac arrest. Fellow firefighters initiated CPR, and resuscitated him.

He died this past weekend.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
