NY INVESTS MORE THAN $110 MILLION IN SOUTHERN TEIR COMMUNICATIONS

New York State invested $110 million to improve emergency communications and 911 centers, with more than $10 million coming to the Southern Tier.

The money came from Statewide Interoperable Communications (SICG) and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) Operations Grant Programs.

The SICG funding, totaling $90 million, will improve emergency communications through land mobile radio systems, expand communications-focused training, and support the maintenance of existing systems.

The state also awarded $20 million in PSAP Operations grants. Those support operations at 911 call centers, and develop systems to implement Next Generation 911 technology, which lets callers send photos, videos and text messages.

“Emergency communication services play a significant role in public safety,” State Senator Lea Webb said. “Every New Yorker deserves the peace of mind that when they call 911, help is ready and first responders have the tools they need to respond quickly and effectively.”
