ST. GEORGE, La. (WAFB) – Two firefighters are injured, and three residents are displaced following a fire in St. George.
The fire broke out around 4:10 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, on Rue Desiree.
When firefighters with the St. George Fire Department arrived on the scene, they saw flames coming through the roof of a single-story home. After crews determined that everyone was safely out of the home, they began to fight the fire.
A second alarm had to be requested due to dangerous gusts. The flames were brought under control within 45 minutes.
According to the St. George Fire Department, the two firefighters who were hurt suffered injuries that are not life-threatening.
The cause of the fire has not been officially determined, but officials said they are confident the flames broke out because of an electrical issue.
“We urge our residents to always follow manufacturer’s instructions when using household appliances,” St. George Fire Department officials said in a news release. “Never plug refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, or other high-voltage appliances into extension cords; always plug them directly into a wall outlet. Keep the area around appliances clear so they can breathe and operate safely.”
Residents were also urged to make sure they have working smoke alarms. Any smoke alarms that are chirping or more than 10 years old should be replaced.
