NHFD Ambulance Hits Car, Tree – Connecticut

Two firefighters and a motorist are recovering from injuries received during a crash between an ambulance and a car Wednesday night.

Here’s what happened, according to fire department Assistant Chief Ralph Black and police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

At 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a fire department ambulance driver was headed west on Chapel Street, responding to an emergency call. At the intersection of Park Street, the ambulance collided with a car going south. The ambulance then crashed into a tree, heavily damaging the vehicle. The two firefighters in the ambulance were taken to the Hospital of St. Raphael for non-life threatening injuries. The woman driving the car was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for the same.

Avery said that the firefighter driving the ambulance was to be issued a verbal warning for the collision. Chief Black said he could not confirm that as the incident is still under investigation.

The ambulance is in the shop, where mechanics are determining if it’s totaled or can be repaired, Black said.

In other police news, according to Avery:

Four people told police they were assaulted at the corner of Lloyd and Exchange Streets in Fair Haven at 2 a.m. Thursday. They told police that three males in black clothing approached them. Two had handguns. One of the victims was pistol-whipped. Nothing was taken.
