What DO Firefighters REALLY WANT in 2024?

That’s a loaded question. What DO Firefighters really want in 2024? 

When I thought about it, after talking to Firefighters in a bunch of different areas in the past year, things such as the below come up…

-Less mandated holdovers…

-More staffing…

-Hospitals that accept patients within the same calendar day…

-Bosses who get it…(into the job)

-Computers (reporting/training/programs/systems) that work well and fast…

-Firefighters who get it…(into the job)

-Solutions to failing volunteer response…

-Training that matters…

-And the ever-popular issue of “leadership“… a/k/a the capacity to lead.

In quarters, company and chief officer fire station people leadership?

Response and first due company officer immediate emergency leadership?

Working incident, chief officer in-command leadership?

Community & political chief level leadership?

It’s all leadership…and much more.

Each year, this North American Fire Service Survey is run (and results are always published) by Lexipol/FireRescue1. This year’s survey is focused on fire department leadership, as the issues of “poor agency leadership” really rose to the top as past participants’ key concerns about belonging to their fire department.
