VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER INJURED WORKING CRASH SCENE – OHIO

JACKSON COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – “[A fire truck] can be replaced, Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Randy Baker said. ”My firefighters can’t.”

It was a scary moment for volunteer firefighters in Jackson County as one of their own was injured while on the job.

“It was a little shaky, nerve-racking,” firefighter Charlie Meadows said. “I immediately wanted to check on him.”

Baker said the Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department was responding to a crash near U.S. 35 and Lloyd Bridge Road on Thursday.

“You don’t think it’s going to happen to you,” Meadows said. “We sign up for a bunch of different things. We like to run towards danger. We find some thrill in it, but when it happens to you, you just think that was very close.”

“It’s very heartbreaking,” Baker said. “All of my firefighters are very important to me.”

Baker says if you see emergency vehicles flashing lights to slow down and get over to make it safe for first responders.

Baker said Larry’s spirit is missed at the station, and they are hoping for a full recovery.

“He’s very important, and he’s very important to everybody,” Baker said.

Fire Chief Randy Baker said Foster has a compound fracture on his ankle and shattered his leg. Foster said his first surgery went well.
