Released today on the approximate 5-year anniversary of the structural Line of Duty Death of Firefighter Nathan Flynn (Howard County, MD), and the approximate 2-year anniversary of the Line of Duty Death of Captain Joshua Laird (Frederick County, MD) is this outstanding recreation video from ATF.
Many of you attended personally or watched the “live” program earlier today. BELOW is the actual video link from ATF & related links to watch and share with everyone you know who responds to fires.
LARGE SINGLE-FAMILY DWELLING DURING THUNDERSTORMS-LIGHTNING
ATF has released the detailed video timeline reviewing its analysis of the fire that occurred at 7005 Woodscape Drive on July 23, 2108. Both FF Flynn and Capt. Laird were killed while battling fires in extremely large, single-family dwellings that resulted from lightning strikes during summer thunderstorms.
LIGHTING INDUCED CSST FIRES
Both fires originated due to lightning-induced arc failure of Corrugated Stainless Tubing (CSST), the most common fuel gas (propane and natural gas) piping used in new construction.
FIREFIGHTERS BOTH FALL THRU BURNING FLOOR: Both firefighters, at these two separate fires, were fighting fire on the first floor when they transmitted MAYDAYs after failing through the first floor into the burning basement/crawl space below them.
NOTE: There have been NUMEROUS recent close calls involving dwellings using CSST piping and its relationship to lightning strikes.
THE ATF CREATES A PHENOMENAL TRAINING VIDEO FOR US ALL:
The Bureau of ATF, which is the federal agency tasked with fire origin and cause determination, released the detailed forensic video timeline today along with Howard County Department of Fire Rescue Service, and Frederick County Department of Fire Rescue Service.
The video features full-scale fire testing, computer fire modeling simulations, scene audio, and electronic data sources that detail the sequence of fire events that ultimately led to the LODD of Firefighter Nathan Flynn.
The timeline video concludes with five specific educational points that were developed as a result of the ATF analysis, including a side-by-side comparison of similarities between both FF Flynn and Capt. Laird’s LODD incidents.
