Another tragic day for the fire service as Stockton Fire Department Captain Max Fortuna, 47, was shot and killed in the Line of Duty this morning while operating at a dumpster fire.
Around 0455 hours, SFD Firefighters, including Captain Fortuna’s Engine Co. 2, responded to the report of a dumpster fire with a building exposure in the area of Aurora and Market streets. As Firefighters were operating at the fire, gunshots were heard and Captain Fortuna was hit. Firefighters immediately treated and transported their Captain to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Captain Fortuna was a 21-year veteran of the Department and leaves behind a wife and two grown children.
At 0502 Stockton police responded to the scene and arrested a 67-year-old suspect. They also recovered a gun believed to be involved in the shooting.
