As a follow-up to last evenings TSL posting, Lacon-Sparland (IL) Firefighter Chaise Mangold died from injuries sustained on April 10 in a fire at a family property. FF Mangold, 21, was working on a truck when gas fumes built up in the shed, and there was an explosion about 1515 hours Saturday.
FF Mangold was a dedicated Firefighter for 3.5 years with his department, joining while still in high school at the age of 18. He, his father, and a family friend & his girlfriend were in his dad’s shop. The family friend had been working on a vehicle & there was a build up of gas fumes then a spark. 3 of the 4 victims needed CPR with several of his own fire department members working on Chaise. The fire occurred on 4-10 & he passed away on 4-15 from his injuries which were all internal from the smoke & the length of time CPR was being done.
To his department and community, Firefighter Magold died a hero, as after the explosion, without regard for himself, he attempted to get in a different truck & was going to drive it through a door so others could get out. Unfortunately he went unconscious inside the truck.
Our thanks to LSFD Chief Rich Koch for this update and our sincere condolences to all those affected-as well as our prayers for the survivors fighting to survive.
