On Friday, April 14, the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department (north of Waco, in the West area) responded to a motor vehicle crash on I-35, just south of the new Main Street Market. Upon arriving on scene, it was determined to be a stranded vehicle, but the fire department stayed on scene for traffic control until the wrecker arrived. As Abbott Firefighters were repositioning the apparatus, Firefighter Dan Wright, who was assisting with the repositioning, fell and then was struck by the fire apparatus. Firefighters immediately rendered emergency medical care and called for additional emergency services to assist with the incident. Firefighter Wright was flown to Hillcrest Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries in the Line of Duty.
Dan started as a volunteer Firefighter with Northcrest (just outside Waco) many years ago before moving to the DFW area. In the summer of 2022, Dan and his wife, Susan, moved to Abbott. Dan joined the Abbott Volunteer Fire Department in July and was a dedicated member. He was currently serving as the Secretary/Reporter. Dan rarely missed a call and was always volunteering to assist around the station, with the trucks, and with whatever required paperwork. Firefighter Dan Wright leaves behind his wife, Susan; son, Brent and wife Lisa, along with three grandchildren, Aiden, Carson, and Brooke; and many other relatives and friends.
