A 21-year-old volunteer Firefighter from Mattoon (Illinois) has died from injuries he suffered in a crash while responding to a crash late afternoon Sunday on Interstate 57.
Firefighter Mehdi “Matt” Mourad of the Wabash Fire Protection District, was responding in his personal vehicle to a crash at approximately 1631 hours on I-57 at milepost 184. FF Mourad lost control of his car and rear-ended a sport utility vehicle that was stopped on the right shoulder of I-57 southbound at approximately milepost 188 with its hazard lights activated due to severe downpour rain and related weather in the area.
FF Mourad was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He was then taken to Carle Hospital where he passed away. Mourad had only served with the Wabash Fire Protection District for five days. The two passengers in the other vehicle were reportedly taken to an area hospital but expected to make a full recovery.
It should be noted that “Matt” was in the USA on a student visa and was literally living his dream of coming to America with big hopes which he was working towards. His appreciation was shown by his desire to serve.
