TWO HARTFORD, CT FIREFIGHTERS INJURED AFTER ENGINE STRUCK ON I-91

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Two firefighters and a person were taken to the hospital for evaluation after a Hartford fire engine was struck by a vehicle while responding to a crash, according to the Hartford Fire Department’s district chief.

The crash happened just before midnight on Wednesday while the engine was responding to a single-vehicle crash near Exit 32A on I-91 South, District Fire Chief Mario Oquendo Jr. said.

According to state police, the engine was parked with its emergency lights activated, blocking the Exit ramp 32 A-B. The vehicle was traveling adjacent to the fire engine in the right lane when a third car was allegedly speeding in the exit lane. The third car attempted to pass the second car before the lane closure and allegedly struck the driver’s side of the fire engine and then the passenger’s side of the second vehicle.

Non-life-threatening injuries were reported, and the firefighters have since been released from the hospital, Oquendo said.

The driver of the third car was found at fault and issued a misdemeanor, state police said.

State police are investigating the crash.
