Early this morning at approximately 06:13AM Company 7, South Hill VFD in Virginia was dispatched to a two vehicle MVC SB I 85 at the 1MM.
While crews were on scene working the two vehicle MVC, with Engine 72 and Chief 7 blocking the left lane of I 85 NB to protect crews on scene, which was determined by command to be the safest location for all personnel operating on scene of the primary incident, a sedan at approximately 06:34 AM, which was occupied by two individuals struck the Command Truck first and proceeded towards first responders before crashing into the back of Engine 72. Immediately accountability was completed and we are happy to report that NO first responders were struck, injured or killed as a result of the secondary crash.
Crews immediately split up to handle the primary and secondary crashes and additional resources were called to assist along with shutting down all traffic. Crews on scene determined we had 7 patients that needed medical attention and transport. The driver of the sedan that struck the fire apparatus was entrapped and extrication began immediately. The injured were transported via ground transport by Southside Rescue, Warren County EMS, and Boydton Life Station to VCU-CMH in South Hill Virginia.
