Three Hospitalized Following Ambulance Accident – South Carolina

Three people were transported to the hospital following an accident involving a ambulance in Union County.

The accident occurred at 10:27 on Kelly Road, just outside the city of Union. Union County Officals tell News Channel 7 that the ambulance was taking a patient to Wallace Thompson Hospital when the driver of the ambulance 28-year old Regina Mathis lost control of the vehicle after a SUV was in her incoming lane and caused the ambulance to strike a tree and overturn.

“After interviewing Mrs. Mathis it appears that a brown SUV was in her oncoming lane and she swerved to avoid it,“ said Cpl. Bryan McDougald. “That apparently forced her to react immediately and the ambulance went off the right side of the road and then the left side of the road before it struck a tree and overturned,“ said Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the South Carolina Highway. “The accident is under investigation.“

The Highway Patrol says that Mathis and Union County EMT Rick Waldrop, who was in the back of the ambulance attending to the patient, were taken by ambulance to Spartanburg Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The patient was transported by ambulance to Wallace Thompson Hospital.

McDougald says that the ambulance was operating at Code 3, meaning it had its sirens on and was able to avoid traffic lights.

If anyone has any information regarding the brown SUV they are asked to contact their local Highway Patrol office.
