The Fireman’s home.
I’m not talking about where firefighters live as active firefighters-but where they go after that. And as far as I know, there are only two “fireman homes” in the United States.
A “fireman’s home” is a retirement home for firefighters that have few other options when they get older.
The New Jersey Firemen’s Home – established in 1898 – is the only licensed health care facility in the State of New Jersey whose primary mission is dedicated to the men and women of the New Jersey Fire Service. Located on the historic Lathrop Estates in Boonton, NJ – the Firemen’s Home provides both long term care and residential health care services. The NJ Firemen’s Home is a highly trusted and respected choice for many of New Jersey’s “most senior” Bravest.
Pretty cool, uh? Here is their website: http://www.njfh.org/
Growing up on Long Island, I had heard of “The Firemans Home” many times but it was only after I visited it as a young firefighter did I really understand how cool it was. A place where New York fire departments could insure the comfort of their truly most “senior” members.
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Firemen’s Home started in 1892 as a refuge for indigent firefighters with no safe place to live or take care of themselves, and has become a multi million dollar fully licensed nursing facility that costs millions of dollars every year to operate.
Located in Hudson, NY (just south of Albany or about 2 hours north of NYC)…over the past 125 years, the Firemen’s Home has evolved from a working farm “poor house” with fifteen initial “inmates”, as Home Members were called until 1914, to a fully licensed 100 bed skilled and highly respected nursing home…located on the same grounds of one of the largest and finest FIRE MUSEUMS in North America:
50,000 square feet!
THE BIG EVENT! FIREFIGHTERS PARADE AND FIRE APPARATUS MUSTER.
The FASNY Firemen’s Home (the museum will be open that day as well) will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary on Saturday May 20, 2017. The parade will run from downtown Hudson to the Fireman’s Home and Museum of Firefighting.
The FASNY Museum of Firefighting is also reviving the tradition of mustering fire apparatus on the grounds of the FASNY Firemen’s Home! This event will be open to hand-drawn, horse-drawn, motorized not-in-service and motorized in-service apparatus.
It promises to be a great day of fire history and fellowship as well as an opportunity to see what NY firefighters have done to take care of those firefighters who otherwise may not be able to take care of themselves.
Rest assured the VERY senior firefighters will have some great stories to tell!
Hope to cya there on the 20th for the parade, muster and museum visit.
