On July 4, 2022, seven people were killed and 48 injured at a mass shooting during a parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Although many members of the Highland Park FD were off duty and marching in the parade, they did what most of you would do – they took immediate action.

More than 30 members of the HPFD ran toward the shots, treated victims at the scene, and transported patients. The HPFD members’ actions saved lives, but they were also changed forever by the violence and trauma they experienced.

Join Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage in a conversation to learn how his department responded to this incident, the use of mutual aid, interaction with other internal and external agencies, the changes they’ve made in Highland Park as a result, and how they are helping their members and their community continue to recover.

YOU WILL LEARN FROM THE FIRE CHIEF, FF/EMS PERSPECTIVE:

=How the increase in active shooter incidents is changing the role and training requirements of firefighters everywhere and what you can apply to your own departments.

=Strategies for coordinated fire/police/dispatch response and on-scene operations during active shooter incidents.
=How “built” trust between fire officers/supervisors and line personnel can help them prepare for and significantly increase the chances of members “bouncing back” from critical incidents.
=Key steps to take to support personnel following a critical incident-immediate and long term.
This is genuinely one of those opportunities to learn from a well-respected leader who has been there and what he knew before and what he knows now and how we can all gain from him and his member’s life-changing experiences.
