An off-duty firefighter was injured in a fire on Monday afternoon, fire officials say.
The firefighter, who has been with Arp Volunteer Fire Department for three to four years, was injured when checking on a fire in his neighborhood, according to the fire marshal.
Smith County Fire Marshal Connie Wasson said that the firefighter was at home, not on duty, when he noticed smoke coming from a garage structure near his house. She said he went to the structure and lifted the door, and at that time, flames “flashed out” at him, burning over half of his body. She said no one was in the garage when the fire occurred. The firefighter was the only person injured.
