The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says a crash involving a county EMS unit sent the driver of a second vehicle to the hospital Monday afternoon.
Deputies responded shortly before 4 p.m. Monday to North Highway 17 near South Santee Road where the crash had been reported, sheriff’s spokesperson Alexis Douglas said.
A Charleston County EMS unit was traveling northbound on North Highway 17 approaching Rutledge Road for a non-emergency medical call, she said. Investigators say the ambulance changed lanes to turn left onto Rutledge Road when a civilian vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the ambulance.
The crash caused the civilian vehicle to roll over into the median.
Douglas said the driver, who was not restrained, was ejected from the vehicle through its sunroof.
The EMS unit was not transporting any patients at the time of the collision and lights and sirens were not being used.
Crews took the driver of the vehicle to an area hospital but the ambulance crew reported no injuries.
The sheriff’s office Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
