A Volusia County Sheriff’s Office helicopter made an emergency landing near DeLand Monday evening. The aircraft landed in an area of Hwy. 17-92 that is under construction, near the intersection with Orange Camp Road.
There were no significant injuries and only a minor fire that Volusia County Fire Services helped extinguish. Northbound 17-92 was rerouted for about an hour, but southbound remained open.
The landing happened at approximately 6:39 p.m. in a section of road adjacent to the northbound lanes that is under construction for widening.
The Bell 407 helicopter with pilot Michael Markovich and flight paramedic David Swartzfager on board was on its way to a conduct a medivac for a vehicle crash near DeLand when it experienced engine failure. The pilot was able to safely make a hard landing.
The Volucia County Sheriff’s Office says The Federal Aviation Authority and the National Transportation and Safety Board were notified of the incident and will conduct their respective investigations into what happened.
