SC FIREFIGHTER LODD UPDATE-Now What? Just Don’t Do Nothing (The Secret List)

All,

James “J” Michael Muller, 25, was born November 18, 1997, in Columbia, South Carolina, and died in the Line of Duty on Friday, May 26, 2023 working as a Firefighter for the Irmo Fire Department, on a mutual-aid fire.

While NIOSH is essentially shut down at this point, the report has been released by the IFD.

Considerations for all of our departments based upon what occurred at the DOUBLE MAYDAY working fire include:

-Standardized and required size up

-Assured personnel accountability

-Company supervision

-Assigned Safety Officer

-Conflicting tactics

-Tactical progress reports

-MAYDAY management

-Rapid Intervention deployment

-Pre incident planning

-Rapid water supply establishment

QUESTIONS FOR US ALL:

CAN WE/DO WE:

-Assure continuous size ups?

-Assure the location and status of all company personnel?

-Staff division supervisor positions?

-Use a tactical worksheet from the start including a MAYDAY checklist?

-Ensure communications so all companies are following the same tactical plan?

This multi-family dwelling fire scenario pretty much exists in every fire response area — even some rural areas.

There is so much for all of us to learn from this important report.

And for those that do, stop whining that “all LODD reports are the same” and start using this information to learn what happened, and what each of us can do to not repeat history — to best honor the life and sacrifice of “J”.

NOW WHAT?

Take the info, compare it to your/my/our policies and training and if change is needed, then run it through training and get it done. Honor your Brother.

… Just Don’t Do Nothing.
