Michigan State Police troopers from the Munising post said the crash occurred at about 1 a.m. Sunday along M-28, two miles west of the intersection of Forest Lake Road in Onota Township.

The ambulance was taking a patient from Munising Memorial Hospital in Munising to Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.

Troopers said ambulance driver Matt Waldron drove across a section of "black ice" and lost control of the ambulance. He was able to momentarily regain control of the vehicle, and was returning to the westbound lane when the ambulance again slid out of control.

Waldron drove off the roadway and into the south ditch along M-28. As the ambulance slowed, the back end swung around, causing the vehicle to roll slowly onto its side, troopers said.

The EMT who suffered the minor injury in the accident was not the driver and the injury did not require the EMT to go to the hospital, troopers said. The name of the EMT was not available from troopers today.

A second ambulance was summoned to the accident scene. The patient was moved to the second ambulance and the patient transfer to Marquette General was then continued.
