RESPONDING VIRGINIA FIRE APPARATUS CRASHES WHILE RESPONDI

Two Emporia Volunteer firefighters escaped serious injury on Sunday evening after the pumper-tanker they were in left the roadway, while en route to a fire. According to Emporia Fire Chief Chris Rawlings, the two were the only ones in the vehicle at the time of the accident, and rain and slick road conditions on the curve they were driving on played a factor in the accident.

The vehicle overturned on leaving the road, and both men were taken to the hospital but released. They were responding to a fire on Lowground Road in the County when the accident happened.

Chief Rawlings said the vehicle was insured, but expects that the department won’t be fully covered for a new vehicle.

At the time of the accident, the fire truck was being followed by another emergency vehicle and the accident was recorded via dashboard camera.

Rawlings said speed appears not to have been an issue.

A slick roadway and loss of traction may be the cause.
