DES MOINES, Iowa — One person was hospitalized with “significant injuries” and two firefighters were treated for minor injuries after an overnight house fire on the south side of Des Moines, the Des Moines Fire Department said.
DMFD Chief Jonathan Lund told Local 5 that crews were dispatched to a residence in the 2800 block of SW 12th Street shortly before midnight for the fire call.
Lund said crews cleared the scene around 2:49 a.m. He also shared that the two injured firefighters were treated, taken to the hospital and eventually released.
One occupant of the home was treated and transported to the hospital. Lund described their injuries as significant, but could not provide additional details.
A pet dog and several cats were reportedly rescued from the overnight fire as well.
An update from the fire department Saturday morning stated there were no working smoke detectors found in the home.
