A local man is in critical condition after police say he stole an ambulance, crashed it and then intentionally jumped in front of a coal truck.
The incident began around 1:00PM Tuesday at the Subway sandwich shop along Route 22 in Hollidaysburg. Police Chief Jeff Ketner tells WRTA News the man stole the emergency vehicle, drove it to a minister’s home at the top of Frankstown Road and then crashed it in a wooded area in Logan Township. After realizing the minister was not home, Ketner says the man then walked back to the edge of Frankstown Road, crouched down and then jumped in front of a coal truck.
The man was taken to the Altoona Regional Trauma Center with critical injuries. His name has not been released. Ketner says police are in the process of reviewing video from the ambulance. Both he and Logan Township Police Chief Ron Heller say the investigation into the bizarre incident is still ongoing.
