A bike rider from Oxnard has been seriously injured after a crash with an Oxnard Fire Department truck, according to authorities.
On July 17 before 9 a.m., Oxnard Police Department officers responded to a crash between a man and a Oxnard Fire truck at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Wooley Road, according to a department news release.
Oxnard Police found a 24-year-old man, who was riding a pocket bike, with “significant injuries” and took him to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition, officers said.
The driver of the Oxnard Fire truck, a fireman, cooperated with the investigation by the Oxnard Police and said he was driving southbound on Rose Avenue and made a right turn on Wooley Road during a green light, the release says.
According to the fireman, the bike rider “attempted to overtake the fire engine on the right to continue southbound Rose Avenue,” officers said. Then, the rider “struck the passenger door area” of the fire truck and was “ejected from his bike, and was run over” by the fire truck, the release says.
The statement continued that the rider was not wearing a helmet and the fireman gave the rider emergency care, the release says.
The crash was captured on video surveillance footage of a nearby business and Oxnard Police is investigating the incident, officers said.
Based on statements and the video footage, officials said “it appears the rider made an unsafe attempt to pass the fire engine on the right when the crash” happened.
Officials added that the rider was on a “vehicle not legal for riding on a public roadway,” the release says.
