OAKWOOD, Okla. — A paramedic with the Woodward County Emergency Medical Service was killed in a wreck while transporting a patient Thursday afternoon near Oakwood, officials confirmed.
Chad Campbell, director of operations for Woodward County EMS, said at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, paramedics arrived to a wreck near U.S. 270 and E 770 Road, about a mile southeast of Oakwood.
“We were notified that one of our ambulances was involved in a car accident. They were transporting a patient, interfacility transfer, from Woodward hospital to Oklahoma City,” said Campbell. “When first responders got on scene, we were then notified that one of our paramedics, Jeff Jones, died from the injuries in the accident. All the other people involved in the accident were treated at the scene and transported to the appropriate facilities.”
Campbell said his thoughts and prayers go out to Jones’ family after the tragic wreck.
“We want all of our prayers and thoughts to go out to Jeff Jones’ family. That’s the most important thing at this point is his family. We also want to extend our thoughts and prayers to everybody else who was involved in this accident,” Campbell said.
Campbell said Jones had worked with the agency for several years and described the man as full of compassion.
“He was very compassionate. One of the most compassionate paramedics we have that works here. He had done a lot of work with Oklahoma City fire on their mental health unit. That was kind of his passion in life was mental health and people who are struggling with that and that made him a very passionate person,” Campbell said.
Ambulance crews from western and southwestern Oklahoma have driven to Woodward to fill in for Woodward EMS, to keep ambulance service running.
Officials said a tractor-trailer was involved in the collision, which shut down roads in the area for just under 4 hours and 20 minutes, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
