TULSA, Okla. — A man was arrested early Saturday after an EMSA medic was attacked at a Tulsa hospital.

The medic was able to evade the attack and was unharmed, EMSA spokesman Chris Stevens said.

Smokey Don Pipes, 34, of Tulsa is being held on an assault with a deadly weapon complaint after reportedly attempting to cut or stab the medic through an ambulance window about 1 a.m. at SouthCrest Hospital, 8801 S. 101st East Ave., according to his arrest report. Pipes’ girlfriend had been transported from a bar after a medical issue, the report said.

Pipes has previous felony convictions in Tulsa County dating back to 1996. Most recently, he was convicted for discharging a firearm, pointing a weapon, two counts each of eluding a police officer and obstruction, and running a roadblock after eluding a police officer.

He was released from prison in February, Department of Corrections records show. He is on probation until 2022. He is being held at the Tulsa Jail with bond set at $100,000. Stevens said attacks on medics are very rare in Tulsa.
