NY FIREFIGHTER SUFFERS MINOR BURNS AT FIRE

A Syracuse firefighter suffered a minor burn Sunday morning while helping battle a fire that forced two adults and their four grandchildren from the home, city fire Lt. Joe Galloway said.

The firefighter who was burned did not go to the hospital, Galloway said. His injury was minor.

Someone called 911 at 9:34 a.m. to report the fire at 310 Elsner St.

There were no working smoke detectors in the house, but the family was able to get out safely because someone passing by saw smoke coming from the second floor and told them to get out, firefighters said.

When firefighters arrived at 9:37 a.m., they found the fire in a concealed space on the second floor. They later determined the fire was caused by a fault in electrical wiring in a concealed area, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.

A bedroom on the second floor and another bedroom on the first floor had what firefighters described as moderate damage.

Disaster Action Team volunteers with the American Red Cross of Central New York assisted the couple displaced by the fire, Red Cross officials and firefighters said.
