MINN FLAGS AT HALF MAST TO HONOR FIRE CHIEF

By KTTC:

Governor Tim Walz has ordered United States and Minnesota flags to fly half-staff at all state buildings, following the death of Goodview Fire Chief Jason Gruett on Wednesday.

Gruett, 51, was a firefighter for 19 years, and served as chief for the Goodview Fire Department for the past seven years.

“Chief Jason Gruett was a deeply respected leader and dedicated firefighter who selflessly served his community for nearly two decades,” Governor Walz said. “Chief Gruett’s kindness, generosity, and commitment to service impacted countless lives. Minnesota mourns this tragic loss, and I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Goodview Mayor Ben Klinger said Gruett was always ready to help anyone at any time. Klinger previously worked as the deputy fire chief, working alongside Gruett for several years.

“Chief Gruett left huge boots to fill. If someone needed help, he was there,” he said. “Chief Gruett was the most caring and generous person we have ever met. He would give the shirt off of his back to a stranger.”

Deputy Fire Chief Matt Kramer said the loss of Gruett will leave a big impact on the Goodview Fire Department.

“A huge hole has been left in our department,” he said. “We are in shock and grieving with Chief Gruett’s family.”

Gruett’s family reminds first responders, as well as others, about the importance of mental health, and remind them that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, you can contact resources as such as MNFIRE (888-784-6634) or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988). Both resources are available 24/7.
