MAYDAY CALLED, FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN TWO-ALARM HOUSE FIRE – CONNECTICUT

ANSONIA, Conn. (WFSB) – A house fire on South Cliff Street displaced up to nine people Monday evening and sent one firefighter to the hospital for evaluation.

The fire started around 5:30 p.m. at a home that’s split into three apartments, according to officials. Firefighters found heavy fire on the second floor when they arrived.

No civilians were injured in the blaze, but one firefighter was transported to the hospital for evaluation. The chief did not have an update on that firefighter’s condition. Another firefighter was treated on scene and returned to work.

During the firefighting efforts, crews had to call a mayday when five firefighters were briefly trapped. All five were able to get out quickly and are fine, the chief said. They remained on scene continuing to work.

The fire department called a second alarm due to the conditions, cold weather and ice that complicated the response.

Between six and nine people have been displaced by the fire, though an exact count wasn’t immediately available.

The Ansonia Fire Department had asked drivers to use caution in the area.
