PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (WPEC) — A man is dead after he fell from a moving ambulance, according to authorities in Florida.
A 70-year-old patient that was being transported exited the rear of the ambulance and fell onto the roadway, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
The ambulance was heading south on Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, Florida Tuesday around 9 p.m.
A 29-year-old paramedic tried to stop the patient, but fell on to the roadway in the process.
The paramedic was critically injured trying to save the man.
The crash report stated the 70-year-old man was struck by multiple vehicles, including a sedan and a tractor-trailer. The ambulance came to a controlled stop on the southbound outside shoulder, while the tractor-trailer and sedan originally left the scene but returned a short time later.
Investigators said the patient was pronounced dead at the scene.
The paramedic was rushed to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
