MALIBU, Calif. (KTLA) — Police are investigating the suicide of a firefighter known for her support of the Malibu Lagoon Restoration Project.

Authorities believe 35-year-old Stephanie Glas, of Malibu, shot and killed herself in her boyfriend’s home in Corral Canyon on Saturday night.

Glas was driven to Pepperdine and then airlifted to Northridge Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 11 p.m.

According to her longtime boyfriend, Steve Woods, Glas had become increasingly upset over hostility in the Malibu community over the restoration project.

He said that last week protestors hurled insults at her for holding up a sign in support of the California State Parks department and the lagoon project, prompting her to break down and cry.

Opponents of the project say the plan will destroy the lagoon and flatten waves at Surfrider Beach.

Backers say it will support more plants, birds and fish.

"I wasn’t really aware of how it was affecting her until that moment when she broke down," Woods told the Malibu Patch.

"I think that part of some of the things she has been having to deal with has evolved to one thing layering on top of another thing. I think this was the one thing that sent her over the edge a little bit."

Glas was a city of Los Angeles firefighter. Woods also said he believed Glas may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from her work.
