On the evening of October 10th, units were dispatched to a reported building fire. Upon arrival there was heavy fire and smoke showing from a second story apartment. Q41 had command with their FF waiting on another crew to make entry. Upon my arrival on E46, we were assigned fire attack with the Q41 firefighter. We encountered high heat and limited visibility when arriving at the fire apartment. As the attack was made, the FF on the nozzle sustained minor burns to his left ear.
Lessons Learned: This serves as a reminder for everyone to make sure their ear flaps are down prior to making entry. I know that a lot of people keep them rolled or folded up when not in use, but that extra amount of protection could have made the difference in this situation. We need to make sure we are checking each others PPE placement prior to entering any situation where we may rely on it for protection.
