We regret to pass on to you the Line of Duty Death of Chief Robert “Rob” Orkies of the Zoneton Fire Protection District in Shepherdsville, Kentucky (just south of Louisville).
Chief Orkies developed duty-related cancer and was undergoing treatment while still actively serving as Fire Chief. He subsequently contracted COVID-19, also reported in the Line of Duty. Chief Orkies died this morning from complications of both. In October, Chief Orkies had his cancer removed, but he developed blood clots in his lungs. His doctors had put his chemotherapy and radiation treatment—which began earlier this month and were set to run through December—on hold after Orkies contracted COVID-19.
Chief Orkies served for over 36 years — 26 of which were with Zoneton Fire. He was a very popular and engaged fire service member, a long-time member, supporter, and friend of Supporting Heroes, a public safety advocacy group-who has posted more information on the Chief HERE:
Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In Peace.
