DAVISON TWP, MI — Police say icy roads played a major factor in a single-vehicle crash Monday night that left a 23-year-old Lapeer woman dead and three others injured.
The crash took place around 7 p.m. Jan. 16 when a van driven by a 27-year-old Davison man headed east on Lapeer Road, between Cummings and Washburn roads, went off the north side of the road and struck a tree.
An ambulance called to the scene highlighted the area’s treacherous road conditions as it slid along the top of the roadway while moving further back from the crash site.
Other vehicles slowly maneuvered around until the area was cleared.
Police said Kaitlyn Becker died at the scene. The driver, a 2-month-old boy, and 1-month-old infant were transported from the scene to Hurley Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
A section of Lapeer Road was shut down for several hours as police investigated the scene but also to allow for a Genesee County Road Commission vehicle to pass over the road and break up the ice.
Firefighters, police officers and some reporters slipped and slid along the coated road where pockets of ice up to one-quarter of an inch created hazardous conditions.
