GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – The Gadsden Fire Department temporarily closed their Club View Fire Station due to what they say were staffing issues last week. The decision left neighbors living near Fire Station 8 concerned and confused as to why a fire station would be closed.
Over the last 15 – 20 years,Gadsden Fire Chief Vance Brown say at times they do have to close a fire station depending on staffing for that day.
Chief Brown says many neighbors were misinformed thinking the station was completely closed, which is not the case. He says they had 11 firefighters either sick, on annual leave, or fulfilling their military obligations.
Chief Brown says the decision was made to close the station temporarily while still able to provide fire and medical services in the area with the help of neighboring Rainbow City Fire Department.
“We mutual aid with our neighboring cities so, whether it be on the Attalla side with those guys, whether it be county club, and club view with Rainbow City…medical wise that day we had one call fortunately. It was a response time of a little shy of, it’s about 5 minutes, which is phenomenal,” said Brown.
Chief Brown says Fire Station 8 is not closing and it’s the next station to be rebuilt. The city plans to unveil their new fire station on Noccalula Falls Thursday.
