We have been having problems at work with cracked Scott facepieces. I found a site that the Navy uses where a person can go to to see what the cracks looks like. Some are very subtle. Also note that Scott came up with a redesign for the Navy to improve impact resistance I was kind of surprised about that since I hadn’t heard of Scott coming out and telling anyone, firstly, that there was a problem, and second, that they had a new face piece offered for replacement. So here at our Fire Department, we are putting out a Safety Warning for all Company Officers to check their personnel’s facepieces.
Below is the message the Navy put out to their personnel. Also attached are the facepiece inspections with pictures that you can put on your site if you wish, and the Navy site from where I found the article.
As a result of identified and reported SCBA facepiece lens cracking per Naval message 121457ZMAR03, our ISEA and manufacturer has come up with a redesign of the facepiece lens to improve impact resistance. Instruction on how to obtain these new redesigned lens is referenced in Naval message 211522ZJUL04.
