LARUE COUNTY, Ky. —
Families were advised to evacuate Thursday as a wildfire burned in a large wooded area near homes in LaRue County.
The sheriff said Thursday that at least 20 families living near Edlin Hill Road were advised as firefighters from several agencies in and around LaRue County worked to control several fires burning within a 200-acre wooded area between New Haven and Hodgenville.
Officials believe it started around midnight Thursday.
The sirens woke up resident Brenda Young.
“We seen the fire above the trees and the smoke and the top of the hill from our place is like a mile so it was scary,” Young said, adding that she is considering evacuating if it gets any closer.
LaRue County emergency management director Troy Williams said firefighters are working their hardest to make sure no more families have to evacuate but admits it is an uphill battle. The conditions landed at least one firefighter in the hospital.
The injured firefighters are expected to be OK.
While Williams said by Thursday evening most of the fire was contained, those who live nearby said they were still shocked it came so close to home.
“People need to really be careful,” Hornback said. “Don’t throw cigarettes out, don’t burn leaves. This is bad.”
Officials do not believe the fire was started intentionally.
