FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN FIRE INVOLVING THREE HOUSES – INDIANA

MUNCIE, Ind. — Three houses in an eastside Muncie neighborhood were severely damaged by fire on Saturday morning.

Paul Sykes, a Muncie Fire Department battalion chief, said the blaze was believed to have started in a house that had most recently been lived in by “squatters.”

The flames then spread to two nearby houses, which were apparently occupied.

Emergency dispatchers were first notified of the blaze, then reported at 1003 E. Seventh St., at 6:17 a.m.

The only injuries reported were burns suffered by a city firefighter. Sykes said that man, believed to have suffered second-degree burns to his hands, was released following treatment at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

American Red Cross representatives were assisting those displaced from the homes, the battalion chief said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
